5 Ways to Fight Spring Allergies

Spring is here, which means so are grueling, debilitating allergies. Whether your eyes are watery, your skin is itchy or you feel lethargic, allergies can be quite the nuisance.

Below we’ve compiled ways to combat allergies so you can enjoy a peaceful and painless spring.

Take allergy medicine
This one might seem obvious, but many of us (cough, cough) forget to take allergy medicine. Antihistamines–Allegra, Zyrtec, Benadryl, Claritin etc.–are the most common, and arguably most effective, drugs to fight allergies. The downside of antihistamines is that they can cause sleepiness, dizziness, dry mouth, weight gain, irritability and nausea. If you’d like to try evidence-backed homeopathic ways to treat allergies instead, try acupuncture, saline nasal sprays or Neti pot, and the herb butterbur.

Check pollen charts
Pollen levels can be higher on certain days. Check your local news outlets for pollen count or type in your zip code at Pollen.com. On days when levels are high, consider limiting your time outside or stay indoors during peak pollen hours from 5AM-10AM and at dusk.

Wash your hair
Hair collects pollen, which means while you sleep, you’re rolling those nasty little allergens all over your pillow. Before you go to sleep, consider washing your hair, especially if you’ve been outside for most of the day. If you’re not into washing your hair every night, change your pillow cases and bed sheets often.

Shut your windows (or get a filter)
When pollen count is high, make sure to seal up your house. That means keeping windows and doors shut. If bringing pollen into the house is still a problem, consider installing a HEPA filter in your air conditioning system. HEPA filters trap pollen, mites, spores and more.

Try local honey or probiotics
You’ve probably heard the old adage: “Eat local honey to treat your allergies!” There is inconsistent evidence that local honey indeed cures suffering from pollen; however, it is a healthier alternative to sugar and has antioxidant properties, helps heal wounds and helps with digestion.
