According to health insurance carriers, there are two types of medical professionals you see: primary care physicians and specialists. You may be wondering if your OBGYN, the medical professional that you most regularly see, qualifies as a primary care physician or specialist.

We’ll break it down for you:

Your OBGYN can be a primary care physician AND a specialist depending on why you are going or whether or not the insurance company lists them as a physician or specialist.

Example: If you are going to see your OBGYN for a wellness checkup, then this would be listed under primary care- not something a specialist would do. However, if you are going to your OBGYN for something more specific, say pertaining to prenatal care, then this would be considered specialist services.

The best way to know if your OBGYN is considered a primary care physician or specialist according to your insurance carrier is to call your insurance carrier and ask.
