Buying organic food is something we all want to do, but when we’re ready to buy it at the grocery store, we often suffer from sticker shock.

$3.99 a pound for organic apples when I can spend $.99 for non-organic apples? Yeah, that’s a no-brainer!

When your grocery bill is at risk of doubling or even tripling due to the high cost of organic food, the idea of “eating healthy” can fall by the wayside.

But are there organic foods you really should consider buying?

The answer is yes.

According to the nonprofit Environmental Working Group, who researches toxins in our food and water supply, the fruits and vegetables listed below, a.k.a. “The Dirty Dozen,” have high levels of pesticides. Studies have linked some pesticides to an increase risk of cancer, reproductive harm, endocrine disruption and abnormal development in children. Consumers should consider buying the organic equivalents.

Organic food as a whole is also found to be more nutritious. Organic dairy and meat contain 50% more omega-3 fatty acids and organic produce is higher in antioxidants.

So how do you buy organic food when it’s so expensive?

A good place to start is your local farmer’s market. Many local farmers utilize organic farming (make sure to ask), and their prices are often lower because they’re cutting out the middleman (the grocery store).
